According to Btselem (Hebrew), Nasser Nawaja, of Susiya, one of the most decent and brave people I have met, has been arrested by the Israeli army/police. The police are refusing to say what the charges are, and he is being prevented from seeing a lawyer.
A man stands up to an oppressive government, challenges their hideous and racist polices, and then, soon enough, finds himself under arrest. I am shaking as I type this. I can only think about Nasser, sitting in some jail cell right now, and his kids, wondering where their father is. On monday, he texted me a picture from Susiya, of all of them playing soccer, and said that they missed me, and told me to come visit soon. I don’t have the right words right now.
I will update, because I don’t know what else to do.
Update: Btselem statement in English here:
Update, Friday, January 22nd: Nasser is still being held. Here is a video of his wife, Hiam Nawaja, explaining how he was taken.
”[Hiam’s and Nasser’s] children were laying in their beds, witnessing how [the soliders] handcuffed their father.”
Also, +972 Magazine has an update about the whole case here.
Update, Monday, January 25th: Nasser has been released, الحمد لله.
